
The S-400 Triumf, designated by NATO as SA-21 Growler, is a mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system originating from Russia’s NPO Almaz in the 1990s as an advanced version of the S-300 family, initially known as the S-300 PMU-3; it officially entered service on April 28, 2007, with its first operational battalion commencing combat duty on August 6, 2007, and is intended to be succeeded by the S-500 system.
